When Zero is enough

The first indication of the future-to-be is out. The cut-off for Physics for IIT-JEE 2008 is ZERO !! Thanks to the mindless increase in the number of seats and creation of new IITs when the last one to be created has still to gain foothold by the crappy Ministry of Human Resources Development.

From now on all you have to do to be an IITian is to leave the paper blank. That, if you don't have a scheduled caste/tribe/OBC certificate. Now, before you begin to bash me for discrimination against oppressed people, let me mention that I belong to OBC and I thank GOD that this crap was not there when I got through IIT-JEE. Being an IITian is no more an achievement, something I, and all pre-2008 IITians, will always be proud of. Clearing JEE gives you the self-confidence which can't be described. It has to be experienced first hand. Not anymore. In very near future, a new born may very well receive an OBC/SC/ST certificate as a birthday present.

The anti-IIT people may say whatever they want, but they can't deny the very fact that the Brand IIT was one of the very few things which could compete and succeed anywhere in the world. Not anymore. It will no more be Brand IIT but Brand IIT-Kgp or Brand IIT-Mumbai or Brand IIT-Chennai or Brand IIT-Kanpur and so on. If you think of it carefully, it will do more harm to the students than good. Now they ask, "Which college?" and you say, "IIT". Tomorrow they'll ask," Which IIT?" And those who won't belong to one, won't even be considered. By the time this government completes its tenure, it will have done irrepairable damage to our education system (apart from national security et al)
The meritous students will still get a good All India Rank and therefore a good IIT, but in all probability, their credibility will be reduced, if not lost, because there will be tens of thousands of other students studying in an institute with the same name. The outside world will find it easier to shun them all , rather than find out which IIT is good and which is bad.

I believe that if one really wants welfare of the oppressed tribes, they should make sure the chidren have proper primary and secondary education. Thrusting them into an IIT hasn't and would never help them. 50 % reservation is not the solution. And if you are hell bent on reserving seats, do so at all the public and private schools. That would serve generations in a way you can't even imagine. Giving them easy admission to IITs is like pushing someone very hard and hoping that (s)he would reach the top, not realising that (s)he will fall flat more often that not. Common sense says that teach them how to climb the ladder and give them enough confidence so that they can reach the top on their own.

Good luck to all the future IITians, for you'll have to keep fighting beyond JEE.

Getting through JEE was such a confidence-booster as you rightly pointed out - you felt as if you could achieve anything if you put you mind to it - simply because you had been able to pull off something in which the probability of success is phenomenally low.

I would not go into the issue of reservation here - there are smart people everywhere but ruining the sanctity of an exam we all believed is something India would regret in the long run.

Too gooda post and its ashame that what youme and other lay people understand so well doesn't penetrate into the thick skull of the politicians!

I completely agree with akshay1 "....we all believed is something India would regret in the long run."

I am so sensitive with the issue of the resevation that if i start writing it here, i might not just stop where i should... with due respect to all the casts!

but i respect India more than any class or creed!

Cracking JEE is or rather was considered a real acievement, unforutantly I could nto achieve it, but yea I still look upto an IIT-ians with respect, but will I continue to do the same is a big question mark.

Govt has not only increased the number of IIT's but is also planning to rope in teachers from reserved classes, it will only de grade the level of eduction in IIT.

Ahhh as I said earlier in my post education doom is happening not education boom. zero as cut off!! why not negative? Isnt there negative marking in JEE? negative marks should be allowed too :D

@ Akshay
We all can only hope that it stops at least one step before disaster

@ Sakhi
Thanks. May GOD give some sense to the stupid politicians.

@ Nonsense
It's already happening.

@ Reema
The cut-off will definitely go to the negative side, and that too in very near future.

@ Zee
Thanks.
I wouldn't have reacted so much if they had not targeted my alma-mater.

Ur point here is scary and yet so true!!!! Imagine having an IIT in every state???? The whole "exclusivity" goes for a toss!!! Such a sad state of affairs!! One thing we pride ourselves in and cant maintain it well!!!

@ Nova
Thanks a lot !!!
It does have the combined effects of i-Photo and Photoshop :)

The damage has been done to the sanctity of JEE and brand IIT. The coming generations are the ones to lose, which is the saddest part.

leave alone IITs..even the standard of students coming out of engineering colleges is abysmal just coz everyone in the world can get a seat, wenever not on basis of reservations, on basis of sheer money-power...it makes me shiver to even think the doc operating on me would have gotten admission in such a manner!!! :O

sry left out the name in the prev comment! :O

opening new IITs is god re. That brand name and discrimination between the old and the new one will be there, and it is inevitable. Just take the example of UCalifornia, Berkley has its own position...isnt it ?

Its strange that we think of things only when they hurt us... Its good to see that an alumni of IIT is thinking about the future of his alma mater.

But saying isn't enough.... is it?

where are u dude????

@ Saphire
GOD bless India !!!

@ Nayan
You are right, but I would have preferred Brand IIT , not individual brands.

@ Amigos
Thanks, and it's very true that saying isn't enough. I wish something could be done to stop this.
Keep visiting :)

@ Reema
I'll be back soon :)

Absolutely not fair!!

How many people gave their JEE in 1980. How many of them are giving their JEE today?

Have the seats grown in the same proportion?

The country is need of better colleges and more promising engineers.

Of course, giving a reservation isn't fair, but increasing the seats and opening more colleges are absolutely the right thing....
